Tradition Celebration with Room 8!

We have been working hard to complete our tradition writing and today was the day we celebrated! Room 8 came for a visit and we shared our traditions with them. We also got to hear about theirs!
After that we enjoyed a "Hot Chocolate Bar!" (like a salad bar!), with lots of yummy toppings!
We finished off our celebrations by watching a Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer video!
We had a wonderful time! It was very exciting to create a new yearly tradition with Room 8!

Rock, Paper, Scissors!!

Today we had our Rock, Paper, Scissors competition! Though we had lots of fun, the best part was all the canned goods that we raised to donate!
Both our participants and audience were great sports! Check out the fun below and ask your child who our classroom winners were!
Starting on November 23rd we will continue to collect canned goods and the Rock, Paper, Scissors "lives" will be split between our 2 representatives! They will compete against the other school winners on December 2nd, where our class will watch and cheer them on!

For some reason, the pictures won't download onto this page, so please check out our instragram feed at linwood_room_1.
Enjoy!

Halloween Story!

We wrote a Halloween story as a class!
We had choices for the characters, setting and problem.

We chose:
Character: A ghost who is scared of everything
Setting: A spooky haunted house
Problem: A witch's broom broke down

We wrote as a team, putting all our ideas together. We talked about creating a beginning that would hook our readers. We tried to use lots of interesting language and made sure our story was organized by reading it over often.

Don't forget to check out our epilogue and our SURPRISE ending!

The Story of Friendship in Halloween Town

I am going to tell you a story about a ghost who was lonely and scared of everything.

It all began when this ghost decided to go to a spooky haunted house. He really wanted to make some

new friends, so he decided to knock on the door. And then the door simply opened by itself!

Well, the ghost was TERRIFIED! He was about to float away but a monster poked his head out the

door and said "I am HUNGRY..."

The ghost screamed "AUGGGGGGHHHHHH!"

"For a milkshake!" finished the monster!

"Well, said the ghost, "I know where to buy a great chocolate milkshake!"

"But I like swampberry milkshakes!" cried the monster.

"Oh, I know a place for those too!" whispered the ghost. "Would you like to go?"

"YEAH!" cried the monster while he jumped up and down and danced.

They walked down the street to the Spooky Shop to get their milkshakes. Just outside the door

they saw a witch, crying on a chair. She was holding a broken broom.

"What's wrong?" asked the ghost and monster.

"I was flying and a mean space alien snapped my broom. Now I won't make it to the haunted house

party at my friend Dracula's house!" sobbed the witch.

"Don't worry!" shouted the monster "I've known Dracula for years! He's just one haunted house

away from me!"

"We will take you there!" said the ghost.

So, they all bought extra, extra large swamp berry milkshakes and walked together to Dracula's

house.

They all became friends and partied the night away at Dracula's house. The ghost was not afraid

anymore, because now he had friends.

The End

Epilogue:

In case you are wondering, the witch was able to get her broom fixed at the Broom Store.

And even the mean space alien decided to become their friend. I know, because I am him!

Different Kinds of Smart!

We have been learning about how there are many different kinds of smart. We know that everyone has areas of "smart" and areas of "challenge". To help describe the different kinds of smart, the students created photos and wrote descriptions to tell you about one of their kinds of smart!
We also talked about how we can use different kinds of smart to show what we know. For example, one person might write about their science knowledge, another could show their thinking by drawing a diagram and talking about it!

"Word smart is when you can read really well and like books and writing."

"Math smart means you know a lot about math. You like numbers."

"People smart is when you like to help people."

Outdoor Learning

Over the course of the year we will be visiting a special outdoor spot with our Kindergarten buddies. Our "spot" will be Truro Park.
We will visit the park to observe the changing seasons, document our findings and also tie in other curricular areas, such as community and changes in matter. (We will be keeping a close eye on what happens to the creek over the winter!)
We began our outdoor learning by listening to two nature stories on the hill in the Linwood School playground. We then created a web of all the things we see in our playground environment. On our first trip to the park, we will begin to compare what is the same, and what is different.

Morning Routines

For our Morning Routines, we alternate between a literacy and a math focus. For math, we do a SMARTboard routine that includes elements of number sense, problem solving, mental math and patterning. We sing our doubles song, skip count and use our estimation bag. It is a great way to warm our brains up for the day!
When we are working on our literacy routine, we work on word families, blends and letter sounds. We practice our editing skills by fixing up the morning message and also focus on our 5 "words of the week" through a variety of activities. Today we made those words with pipecleaners and wanted to share our work with you!

Read to Someone

We have been working hard to establish our reading routine, or as we call it, Daily 3. Each day we have time for reading, because we know how important it is! So far we have been practicing Read to Self. Today, we tried Read to Someone for the first time. It was AMAZING!!
Together we have created anchor charts about what we should see during different reading jobs. That way we know exactly what to do and can create a quiet environment where our brains can work hard. The third part of Daily 3 will be Listen to Reading, which we will probably start next week.
After our Read to Someone practice today we shared and discussed all the wonderful things that happened. (There were lots!)
What a great way to start the week!

Our anchor charts for Read to Self, Read to Someone and the 3 Ways to Read a Book.

Look at what amazing readers we are!

These are all the positive things that we saw and heard happening!

Dot Day Fun!

Dot Day is a day of standing up and doing brave things. To celebrate Dot Day we make made dots with our kindergarten buddies. We made a mobile by painting or using pastels, markers, crayons or bingo dabbers. It was fun!
We did writing about bravery. We read The Dot by Peter Reynolds and lots of other bravery books too!
We made more dots by colouring on coffee filters and spraying them with water. Then we signed them to make our mark! We will hang them in our hallway!
By Room 1 😀

Friendship!

We are having lots of fun making new friends and connections in Room 1! Together we created a class contract and made charts about my job/your job and how we want our classroom to look, sound and feel. Throughout the creation of each one, the kids were focused on making Room 1 a kind, happy and respectful place where we work as a team. Seems to me that we are off to an amazing start! Take a peek at the pictures below and don't forget to check out our instragram and twitter for more!

First Day!

Today was our first day together in Room 1 and what a day it was! We started out with discovery bins, learned about some classroom routines, went to an assembly, did some writing and art, played some math games and read 3 stories! Whew!!
I was thoroughly impressed with the kindness and teamwork that I saw from all the kids today. It has made me even more excited for the amazing year to come! I look forward to sharing more with you soon!
